Fasting Rules for Hartalika Teej
Hartalika Teej fasting is observed strictly, often without consuming food or water for 24 hours, from sunrise on Teej to sunrise on Chaturthi. Here are the key rules to observe during this fast:
- Preparation: Before the day of fasting, consume only satvik food (pure and simple food) and prepare for the Teej Puja. Complete all necessary preparations for the next day’s rituals.
- Sargi: On the morning of Teej, eat Sargi during Brahma Muhurta (between 4:30 AM and 5:16 AM). This meal includes fruits and sweets and is essential to maintain energy during the fast. The fast officially begins at 6:02 AM.
- Fasting: Women observing the fast refrain from food and water throughout the day. If health conditions such as pregnancy or illness make it difficult to observe the fast strictly, they can consume fruit or juice after Puja.
- Breaking the Fast: The fast is broken at sunrise on Chaturthi by consuming soaked black gram and cucumber. An elaborate meal is prepared afterwards for the entire family.
Rituals for Hartalika Teej
- Puja: The Teej Puja is performed using clay idols or images of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, and Lord Ganesha. The idols should be installed in the afternoon, and the Puja is carried out during Pradosh Kaal, which begins at sunset.
- Solah Shringar: Women wear new clothes and adorn themselves with all 16 traditional ornaments, known as solah shringar. Sindoor, mangalsutra, bangles, and other adornments are important for married women. These items are also offered to Goddess Parvati during the Puja.
- Offerings: Items symbolising marital happiness, such as red sarees and bangles, are offered to Goddess Parvati. Women perform the Aarti for Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and narrate the story of Hartalika Teej.
- Post-Puja Rituals: After the Puja, women present gifts and prasad to their mother-in-law and seek blessings. Women who are fasting for an ideal life partner should seek the blessings of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
Do’s and Don’ts for Hartalika Teej
- Nahay Khay: A day before the fast, bathe, wash your hair, and wear fresh clothes before taking a sankalp (vow) for the fast. Only consume food after performing Puja.
- Avoid Certain Foods: Avoid consuming brinjal, masoor dal, and other prohibited foods during the fast.
- Best Time for Puja: Perform the Puja in the morning, but if that’s not possible, the evening Pradosh Kaal is also suitable. It’s recommended to perform the Puja in a group.
- Statues of Deities: Statues of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, and Lord Ganesha are made using sand for the Puja. If making idols isn’t feasible, images of the deities can be used instead.
