Significance of Aja Ekadashi
Aja Ekadashi is a day of great religious importance in Hinduism, solely dedicated to worshipping Lord Vishnu. It is also known as Ananda Ekadashi. Observing this fast with full devotion is believed to bring blessings of happiness, health, wealth, and the fulfilment of wishes. The fast is considered so powerful that it can offer the same benefits as performing the Ashwamedha Yagya.

The Story Behind Aja Ekadashi
According to Hindu scriptures, King Harishchandra, known for his honesty and integrity, once lost his kingdom and family due to past misdeeds. While wandering in the forest, he met Sage Gautam, who advised him to observe the Aja Ekadashi fast. Following the sage’s guidance, King Harishchandra performed the fast with full faith and regained his kingdom and family. Since then, he observed fasts on every Ekadashi, demonstrating the fast’s miraculous effects and divine blessings.

Puja Rituals for Aja Ekadashi

  1. Morning Routine: Wake up early and take a holy bath.
  2. Setup: Place a wooden plank and set up an idol of Lord Vishnu along with Shree Yantra, a form of Goddess Laxmi.
  3. Lighting and Offerings: Light a diya (lamp) with desi ghee, offer flowers or a garland, apply chandan tilak, and present Tulsi Patra (holy basil leaves).
  4. Offering Food: Offer Panchamrit (a mix of milk, curd, ghee, honey, and sugar), fruits, and Makhana kheer or any homemade sweets to Lord Vishnu.
  5. Recitations: Read the Aja Ekadashi Katha and chant mantras such as “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya” or spend the day chanting the Vishnu Maha Mantra.
  6. Breaking the Fast: The Ekadashi fast should ideally be broken on the Dwadashi Tithi. However, those who cannot bear the hunger can have milk products and fruits on Ekadashi and break the fast the next day with rice and other salty food items.
  7. Conclude the Rituals: Perform the aarti and distribute Panchamrit among family members.

Vrat Katha of Aja Ekadashi
The story of King Harishchandra’s commitment to truth and duty is a cornerstone of Aja Ekadashi’s significance. Despite losing everything, he remained true to his principles. When faced with further hardships, he fasted on Aja Ekadashi, chanting Lord Vishnu’s name. His devotion was rewarded as Lord Vishnu restored his kingdom and revived his deceased son.

Parana and Its Significance
Parana, or breaking the fast, should be done after sunrise on the day following the Ekadashi fast, during the Dwadashi Tithi. It is essential to perform Parana within the Dwadashi Tithi to complete the observance correctly. Breaking the fast during Hari Vasara, which is the first quarter of Dwadashi Tithi, should be avoided. The best time to break the fast is during Pratahkal (early morning), but if this is not possible, it can be done after Madhyahna (midday).

Fasting Rules for Aja Ekadashi
In some cases, Ekadashi fasting may be observed on two consecutive days. For householders, fasting on the first day is recommended, while the second day is reserved for ascetics, widows, and those seeking moksha (liberation). Devotees who seek the love and affection of Lord Vishnu may choose to fast on both days.
